Live Online Yoga vs On-Demand Recordings: Which is Right for You?

If you've been looking at online yoga options in South Africa, you've probably noticed that 'online yoga' can mean very different things depending on where you look.

Some platforms offer pre-recorded videos, classes filmed in advance that you can watch whenever you want. Others offer live classes that happen at a set time with a real teacher and other students. Some offer both.

They're not the same experience. And depending on your life, your schedule, and what you're actually trying to build, one will work significantly better for you than the other. Here's how to think about it.

What on-demand recordings are good for

On-demand means you choose when. You open the platform, pick a class, and practice on your own timeline. Some days that's 6 am. Some days that's 10 pm. The class is there whenever you are.

This works well if your schedule genuinely cannot commit to a set time. If you travel constantly, work shifts, or have a life that looks different every week, the flexibility of on-demand is real.

It also works well as a complement to an existing practice. If you already have a sense of what you're doing on the mat, you can use recordings to supplement live classes or studio visits without needing a teacher present every time.

What on-demand is less good at: building the habit in the first place. When there's no time commitment and no one expecting you, the flexibility that makes it appealing is also what makes it easy to skip. The class is always there. So is tomorrow.

What live online yoga classes offer that recordings can't

A live class has a time. It happens on a specific day at a specific hour, with a real teacher leading it and other students practising alongside you. That structure is not incidental. It's the thing that makes the difference between practising and meaning to practice.

When you join a live class, you've committed. Even if it's a small one. And the social contract of a set time, even through a screen, changes how you show up.

There's also the teaching. A good live teacher is not just playing a video of themselves. They're reading the room, adjusting the pace, noticing who needs encouragement and who needs to back off. That responsiveness exists in a live class in a way it can't in a recording made weeks ago in an empty studio.

And there's community. The people who practice alongside you week after week, even online, become part of your practice in a way that solo recordings never quite replicate.

Who each option suits

On-demand recordings suit you if: your schedule is genuinely unpredictable week to week; you're supplementing an existing practice rather than building one; you want to revisit specific classes repeatedly; or you're not ready to commit to live class times yet and want to start somewhere.

Live online classes suit you if: you're trying to build a consistent practice and you know you need structure to make it happen; you want a teacher who can see you; you want to be part of a community even from home; or you've tried recordings before and found yourself never quite getting around to it.

The case for having both

The most practical setup for most people is a combination. Live classes for the weeks when you're home and your schedule cooperates. Recordings for the weeks when it doesn't.

Living Yoga offers both.

Live classes run throughout the week on a set schedule: Vinyasa, Jivamukti, Yin, Yoga Strength, and prenatal, taught by the same teachers every week. All active class packs and memberships include access to the recordings library, which holds every class we run.

If you miss Monday's class, the recording is there.

The recordings library is also available as a standalone option for R350 per month on a cancel-anytime basis, for students who want to access the library without committing to live class times.

If you're not sure where to start

The R99 first-week trial gives you full access to all live online classes across the week. Try a class. See if the live format suits you. The recordings will be there when you need them.
